The Central Chairman of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of Pakistan (IEEEP), Tahir Basharat Cheema said while speaking at the 2nd Electrofair 2011 at the Karachi Expo Center that the issue of rental power projects (RPPs) is over for now as only three out of 15 could come on stream before the deadline of December 31, 2009. The remaining unfortunately had been dead.
According to him, the issue is now about the high oil prices raising the tariffs and not of the prices with RPPs. He says that people are creating much confusion in the public. He wants the technical people, especially the engineers, to come to save the government both at the federal and provincial levels. They will be able to guide the leadership of the country in the proper direction in this matter.
The exhibition which of three-days will be held till September 29 and it will feature latest technology displayed by the participating 80 local and international companies. There will also be one-day seminar on power generation and its solutions.
Conducting these seminars and exhibitions should be more than news-making. Amidst this whole issue of RPPs price and high oil prices raising the tariffs, it is the public which is suffering. The government does not have the capacity to produce proper amount of electricity required to fulfill the need of the country when only three out of the 15 RPPs are working and the power cuts continue.
