Recently, Pakistani scholar Dr. Athar Osama has been nominated for the prestigious World Technology Network (WTN) award, which is considered to be an “Oscar of Science and Technology”. The World Technology Summit will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on October 25-26, 2011.
It will be held in association with TIME, Fortune, CNN, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and MIT’s Technology Review. Some of the previous winners include Al Gore, Mohammad Yunus, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Tim Berners-Lee. So far, no Pakistani has won this award. The WTN awards have been presented since 2000 in 20 different categories.
Dr. Athar Osama did his Bachelors from the Pakistan Air Force Academy and had his doctorate in public policy from Pardee RAND Graduate School. He has also been elected as a fellow of the WTN. He has founded the website, www.Muslim-Science.org, which has been recognized by WTN as an agent of change. It is an online journal that discusses various issues of Science, Technology, Innovation and Policy which are related to the Muslim countries.
He has been named as a finalist for the Science and Innovation Media Journalism category. He regularly writes about science, technology and innovation issues especially those regarding Muslim countries. He is also the director of Middle East and Asia for ANGLE Plc., which is a UK-based firm for technology commercialization and policy. He also works for RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA as a science and technology policy analyst.
