Pakistan has huge reserves of natural resources like natural gas, oil, coal, mineral, gold and other precious minerals. But despite being so richly abundant in its land, the country has still not been able to tap into these for its economic growth and societal development. Hence, the energy sector in Pakistan at present time does not have a satisfactory picture despite its potential. Working on an alternate energy means is a discussion of global importance.
For Pakistan, it is an appropriate time to invite international community to help it bring into the mainstream its local resources. This will not only generate the interest of the international community in Pakistan positively, but it will also make it independent from foreign dependence for its energy requirements. The Thar coal project is a massive reserve of coal in Sindh. This project, like most developmental projects in the country, has suffered from the political turmoil in the country due to which its progress has been slow since it was started back in 1994.
Besides coal as an alternate source of energy, wind and solar power are also something that the government should look into for both environmental and economic reasons. The current government promises to take up the challenge of delivering the project to the people this time. A new energy power policy has also being considered in Sindh. If completed, the government says that Pakistan could even be in a position of exporting electricity in the region. The target of Thar coal project is to generate 20,000MW of electricity in 2020.
