The latest smartphone from Apple, iPhone 4S has female voice for directions. Because of this new addition in the world of gadgets using a female voice, the debate over the gender of computerized voices has risen anew amongst bloggers. But it is not just the case with iPhone 4S applying a female voice as most of the devices and machinery from cars to airplanes to other tech gadgets have employed female voices. The scientists believe that the reason for this lies in the biology of nature.
According to many scientific studies on the subject, people find a female voice more pleasant than a male’s. The second reason is that it is easy to find a good female voice than a likeable male voice when voice-casting, according to the Stanford University Professor Clifford Nass. He has written a book called “The Man Who Lied to His Laptop: What Machines Teach Us About Human Relationships”. He further believes that human brain is developed to like female voices more than males ones.
May be it is because one of the first sounds that a child hears and often hears a lot during years of early growth is that of a mother. In one of the studies on the matter, fetuses were found to respond to their mother’s voices only. Not to any other woman’s voice or even to their own father’s voices. This is how much a mother’s voice means in a child’s life. Even historically, female voices have been used because they were distinct to be recognized during the wartimes.
