Wateen Ranked No. 1 Wireless Broadband Company

Pakistan’s leading converged communications service provider, Wateen Telecom, has been ranked the number one wireless broadband service provider in the country by PTA. In a survey for quality of service for all broadband service providers, Wateen was ranked first in the overall standings for all wireless broadband operators in the country.
In pursuance of PTA’s role to safeguard of consumer interests and growth of quality broadband services, PTA carried out the second nationwide Broadband Quality of Service (QoS) Survey of all wireless and wireline service providers throughout the country. The survey was conducted during third and fourth quarter of 2011. It is worthwhile to note that QoS generally determines the standing and status of country’s telecom services; therefore, special emphasis is exerted to keep the QoS of broadband companies at a satisfactory level. PTA has devised QoS standards/Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in line with best international practices and in consultation with service providers. The post survey analysis is carried out on the basis of scores against each KPI.

wi-tribe and UET Unveil ‘wi-cam’- Taking Customer Experience to the Next Level

wi-tribe Pakistan, rated number one for customer satisfaction, and Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science, University of Engineering and Technology (KICS-UET) unveiled ‘wi-cam’ at a press conference held at the UET campus today.

wi-cam, a CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Management and Administration tool, developed by students and graduates of KICS-UET using open-source technology, allows broadband companies, such as wi-tribe, to remotely configure and manage CPEs, while receiving instant notifications and access to live data. Not only does this result in an improved customer care experience, it also enables customers to continue enjoying seamless connectivity.

wi-tribe entered into a strategic public-private partnership with KICS-UET to conceive, develop and launch a fully funded research and development program, enabling the innovation of this breakthrough feature-rich management tool. With wi-cam, wi-tribe and UET jointly demonstrate that sourcing local development of critical customer service innovation is not only possible, but also essential to the proliferation of technical capabilities within Pakistan.

PTA Announced Results For Broadband Quality of Service Survey 2011

In pursuant to safeguard consumer interests and in context of raising the quality of broadband services, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) under the direction of its Chairman, Dr Muhammad Yaseen carried out the second nationwide Braodband QoS Survey of all wireless and wireline service providers throughout the country during third and fourth quarter of 2011.

During the survey the already devised Quality of Service (QoS) Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in consultation with services providers were measured. These are Network Availability, Service Availability, Download and Upload bandwidth Speed (i.e. how much data a subscriber can receive or send to the maximum), Round-Trip Time (i.e. the time taken for the data to reach a particular destination and return), Contention Ratio (i.e. the ratio of Total bandwidth/No. of subscribers or number of subscribers per unit of bandwidth) and Retain-ability (i.e. for how much time a connection remained connected during the period of 60 minutes), etc. It is worthwhile to note that higher the bandwidth of download/upload speed and retain-ability and lower the round trip time and contention ratio, higher is the service quality is considered superior.

PTA grades aforesaid parameters into categories like A, B, C etc, based on the percentage of score obtained during the measurement. For 1Mbps broadband package of wireless broadband service providers, Wateen Telecom has been placed in Category-A at Lahore and Rawalpindi and Category-B at Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar. Similarly, Qubee and WorldCall are also in Category-A at Lahore and Category-B at Karachi and Wi-Tribe is in Category-B at Rawalpindi. Likewise, for 1Mbps broadband package of wireline broadband service providers, PTCL has been placed in Category-A at Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Quetta and in Category-B at Karachi. The complete Broadband QoS Survey 2011 results are placed at PTA website http://www.pta.gov.pk for the awareness of general public.

Wateen to Revolutionise Communication Through the Launch of Freedom Booths

Wateen Telecom, has announced the launch of its new Freedom Booths, a revolutionary communications medium. The Freedom Booths – the first of their kind to be launched anywhere in the world – reflect Wateen’s capabilities as a leader in converged communication services and exemplify the company’s data, voice and content creation services.

The applications for the Freedom Booths are limitless. This cutting-edge medium of communications aims to maximise the application potential of the internet, while helping connect people across the country. The Freedom Booths, which looks like old telephone booths from the 60s, include a laptop fitted with a web camera and a telephone system through which consumers can make voice calls to their loved ones and record the ideas and messages they would like to share with others.

With approximately 1.5 million connections serving a population of over 175 million people, Wateen believes it is necessary to promote the benefits of telecommunications technologies and the internet to the people of Pakistan. Wateen is carrying out this experiential marketing activity in Multan, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Sahiwal and Sargodha, where the Booths are being taken to select public venues on the back of quad bikes. Wateen Announced Recharge and Reconnect Winner’s

Wateen Telecom, Pakistan’s leading converged communications provider, announced the winners of its third lucky draw in the ‘Recharge and Reconnect’ campaign through which it is incentivizing subscribers to recharge their accounts early.

The ‘Recharge and Reconnect’ lucky draw campaign is aimed at building a connection with Wateen customers, while encouraging them to recharge their accounts before the recharge date for each month. Study Says Men Are Reckless Online: Are You One of Them?

There is a new study, which is hardly that surprising, shows that men do riskier things online as compared to women. This is something which is also generally believed to be the case, but now there is a study to support the claim. The study was done by the security firm, Bitdefender, and says that men are more likely to disclose their exact locations and accept friendship requests from strangers than women do.

This does not mean that men are more open to interact with everybody that virtually comes across them, but that they are making themselves more vulnerable of being attacked online with such recklessness. Women by nature are more cautious of doing anything whether online or offline as compared to men. They take time making decisions and when they do decide, it is their final word on a subject. Men on the other hand, are always on the edge and restless. They want things done fast, even if the results of that mean not what they desire. At least generally, this is the case.

Now, there is no intention on the part of this author to start a tug-of-war between the two genders, but human species are by God’s Consent made in this way. The security firm, Bitdefender, has also found out that data theft happen to more men than women because of this carelessness than for any other reason. Such is the trend anywhere in the world and is not specific to any one country. Where do you fall in the two categories, of being reckless or careful online surfer?

Reality Check: Is Email a Thing of the Past?

The new remark by social media tech giant, Mark Zuckerberg that, “We don’t think a modern message system is going to be email” is being interpreted by many as an alternative way of saying that email is actually an obsolete way of modern communication on the internet. With the tremendous growth of social media, certainly this seems to be the true case. Though that email has developed a lot since it began in 1971 when the programmer Ray Tomlinson sent the first message, it is now facing a tough time with the advancement that social media has come to provide.

Amidst such a competition, email accounts have significantly grown in number and are on the rise every day that technology market researchers predict they will reach the number of 4.1 billion by 2015 from their current number at 3.1 billion. This suggestion by Zuckerberg is not anything new. The demise of email is being talked about since long now in the social media world. One reason is very much understandable why social media enthusiasts would like to paint such a picture where email is weak and down and that they are coming out on the top. But it is what internet users feel comfortable in which matters.

Various studies have shown that emailing is not the preferred means of messaging amongst teenagers. But they are teenagers and for the reason of being in that age bracket, they are mostly trendy. When email came around the first time, it was the thing they communicated most through. Now that text messaging and social media messaging has come about, they are into these. This goes to show that email has a more formal touch to it now, with most companies not only having an official email address, but also using it to conduct their business correspondences officially.

But what these corporate companies also have is a Facebook Page and a Twitter account, which means that they do understand the strength of capturing their target audiences on these platforms. It is obvious that businesses will step in on anything that will further their business interest. If that happens through the means of social media as well, then what is faulty in taking chances on it?

If there is spamming in emails, then platforms like Facebook and Twitter as well as other social media networks are also not safe that they could claim any better service when it comes to this menace. There are around a billion email messages sent every day all across the globe, both which have business tendencies and private and personal ones. It is just as quick and easy as other means of quick and fast communication.

The only difference is which one you use more. If of course, a mobile, an iPad, or an iPhone is that which you hang around with conducting your day to day correspondences, then obviously a text message might be your preference, but the reason that these devices also send emails shows the importance of emailing too.

Facebook Bridges Gaps Between Its Users: How Is It Affecting the Real World?

A recent study done on the relationships the 721 million Facebook users have amongst themselves show that now one is only four users away from being friends with someone on the world’s largest social networking site. This shows the growing connectivity not only between the Facebook users, but more so amidst the people from all regions of the globe. These 721 million Facebook users represent more than 10% of the global population.

This sounds wonderful if it were to be the case in real life world. It would make us care for each other more than we perhaps tend to do. But if it is merely adding people just because you have never had an interaction with someone of a particular nationality, then this bond seems to be a bit superficial. The many social media experts are terming this bridging of the gap as only four degrees of separation which if overcome will directly connect all the users. In the countries where more people have internet access and use social media thoroughly, they have only three degrees of separation between them.

This study says that 92% of the Facebook users are that close to each other. The saying that it is a small world is becoming virtually true and confirms the fast paced advancement in means of communication and information technology. However, two questions do come to mind at the foremost. One is how many of these 721 million users do actually exist and how many are fakes. The other is how many of these users who are connected to another user on Facebook actually know him or her.

The answer to these would actually reveal how much the Facebook users and through it the world is getting closer to each other. If thought upon further there are more questions that arise. The question is what do we make of these connections? How far do they take us in our understanding of each other as people? These may seem to be philosophical or sociological questions, but without having an attempt at these all this advancement in social media would hold little meaning in connecting different races.

It is good business, but is it good for human traditions and values, for developing our relationships as nations of the world, sharing the same planet and hence, in this sense, the same destiny? Facebook is a good platform for sharing ideas and getting information. It is also a wonderful platform to connect with our friends and families.

If the world were to really be a one big happy and peaceful family together, it would be a Utopia come true. At least no one will mind crowning Mark Zuckerberg the king in the field of social media technology. He is already a heroic legend of a sort with a Hollywood biopic about him. With 721 million Facebook users, it seems like everyone we know is using the social network. But every once in a while we do come across those who do not use it at all. They are people too with real lives and as such represent the diversity amongst human beings.

A Matter of Privacy: Existing Online With a High or Low Profile

With so many means of connecting with people around the world and many websites where you can make your own customized profiles to express your style, aesthetics and personality, it seems that one is really creating a virtual existence for oneself on the internet. With so much data about a person out there available online, is there any privacy left anymore? This kind of public information, though that there are options to not disclose the details, is unprecedented in the world of communications and technology.

The websites, like Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare tell us all if all features are used openly. It is almost like charting an online course of our life experiences and writing virtual autobiographies every day and every time we connect using one of these social networks. Have people become more open than they were once before? When there is so much openness, there are also people who would like to have a low online profile.

Such people won’t even disclose their genders and use fake names. This means that with such opportunities of communication, though attractive that they are, some people develop fears of being discovered and use them none the less to keep up with the world around them. They don’t want to be judged and they don’t want to further their presence online, other than just being there as they are in the real world with a mere existence and no involvement in the world around them.

Pakistan Is 12th On the List of Spamming Countries

According to a list released by the security firm, Dirty Dozen, the most spam-relaying country in the world is the US. The list contains the names of 12 countries and on number 12 is the name of Pakistan with 2% of the spam messages contribution. The US sent 11.3% of all spam during September of this year. The second comes South Korea with 9.6% and it previously was at number 7.

Now the amazing fact is that although the US is the worst offender in this case, but altogether the whole of Asia contributes to a significantly higher proportion of global spam more than ever before with almost 50.1% coming from the continent alone. When looked at in terms of continents, Europe is the second with 21.4% and North America is third with 14.2%. Pakistan was previously not on the list, but since the third quarter of 2010, Pakistan has joined in along with Indonesia, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Pakistan being on the list indicates that there are many companies here which are trying to sell wrong things using spam messages that will draw the attention of a user and probably entice him enough to go ahead and buy something. In order to protect one’s computer system against spam, the only solution is to keep one’s anti-virus software up-to-date. The reason the spam attacks occur is due to clicking on links or attachments in spam messages. Hence, to protect your system, never ever open a spam message regardless of whatever it claims and says. Always directly delete it without wasting your time in checking your spam messages.
