UBL Mega Wallet Card: UBL Merged Silver and Gold Wallet Card

United Bank Limited (UBL) has merged their silver visa wallet card into gold visa wallet card. UBL Mega Wallet Card is a revamped version of the existing Wallet Debit Card. The existing UBL Wallet silver & gold card has now been merged into one Mega Wallet card with the limits of the Gold card.

UBL merged it’s silver card into gold without any notification, now the customers to be charged at annual fee of gold card which is Rs.500 and in silver card fee was Rs.250. Now there is no more choice between silver and gold, you have to go for just one option.

UBL Mega Wallet card is the fresh and new with some new features, like every time you use your UBL Mega Wallet card to withdraw cash or conduct transactions, you will be rewarded with points that can be redeemed for exciting gifts.

Technologically Standardized Procedures Ready to Increase Rice Production

Like many things which are traditionally done in farming in Pakistan, rice planting has been done with farmers’ own hands. It is nice and good to have such an attachment with your crops, but planting them every time with hands is laborious and takes a lot of time. Thus, farmers have to work hard in fields in order to cultivate rice on time by the first half of July.

There has been reduction in rice plantation due to this very reason that farmers were falling short for laboring in the rice fields in heat and for doing it all within season. This had caused about 15-20 percent shortage in the yield. Along with this reduction, wheat plantation also suffered for the same reason.

To end these negative issues hurdling the growth of rice, Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB) has given funds of Rs.13.908 million to Rice Research Institute, Kala Shah Kaku (RRI-KSK) for a research project on “Standardization and popularization of direct seeding to increase rice productivity and Resource Conservation”. The project will undertake alternative means to transplant rice in the similar condition as the wheat crop and will save water too.

According to Chief Executive of PARB, Dr. Mubarik Ali, for the last two years, the standardization of technology in terms of seed operations like soaking and drying, seed rate, number and intensity of irrigation, weedicide control and variety for DS technology had already been experimented with at RRI-KSK. Now the standard procedures are ready to be practiced.

Kamran Akmal: Wicket keeper or Goal keeper?

The pathetic performance by Kamran Akmal forced me to write this article. He has been serving Pakistan team for the past many years. And we can’t forget his great performances which led Pakistan to a great victory. But unfortunately from the last 2 years he is not good behind the wickets and misses many stump chances and also drops catches. Almost in every game he drops one or two catches or misses the stump chance.

To win matches you have to take every opportunity, and in events like World Cup there is more responsibility on the shoulders of each team member. It seems that Kamran Akmal is unable to maintain his performance.
In World Cup he is doing the same and in match which Pak played against Srilanka he missed the stump chance and with Newzeland he did the same and dropped the catches.

I think now chance should be given to other wicketkeeper after WC because Kamran Akmal is really a crap behind the wicket. He can’t even catch the ball with gloves so think what if he is not wearing gloves. He is taking the cricket ball as football and he thinks he is for just to save the goal not to catch the ball.

Best of Luck Pakistan but performance of Kamran Akmal is really a big Question.

Merger Of Al Baraka Islamic Bank Pakistan and Emirates Global Islamic Bank Pakistan

Al Baraka Islamic Bank Pakistan (AIBP), the branch operations of Al Baraka Islamic Bank (AIB) Bahrain, a subsidiary of Al Baraka Banking Group (ABG) Bahrain, and Emirates Global Islamic Bank (Pakistan) have successfully merged their operations under the name of Al Baraka Bank (Pakistan) Limited (ABPL). The Head office will be located in Karachi.

ABPL will have assets in excess of Rs. 50 billion, a workforce of 1400 professionals and a network of 89 branches in 36 cities and towns across the country. ABPL will commence operations from October 29, 2010 and consequently, all branches of AIBP and Emirates Global Islamic Bank will be re-branded as ABPL.

The merger, a first in the Islamic Banking sector in Pakistan, positions ABPL to play an important role in further growing an industry which has witnessed tremendous growth over the last 5 years. Pakistani media, especially electronic and to be more specific New Channels has been projecting and broadcasting the violent and brutal scenes over and over again making an event breaking news for many hours. That is effecting the image of Pakistan and Pakistanis a lot and spreading panic among masses. We appeal Chief Justice of Pakistan to take necessary actions to stop TV channels from such actions.

This is an open letter to CJ of Pakistan and will also be dispatched on his, Chairman PEMRA, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, and Associated Press of Pakistan offices.

Your Excellency,

Having heard a lot about your considerate self, I dare to take an opportunity in so far as to solicit your attention, despite I know that your goodself is pretty occupied with certain important issues as 18th amendment, NRO and the likely, to yet an essential matter.

There is no doubt the mass media in Pakistan concurrently enjoys the essential freedom of expression. Due to ever increasing role of globalization, the significance of media has been unquestionably witnessed indispensable in all walks of life in general and human life in particular. The recent developments in the promulgation of an independent judicial system in Pakistan clearly dictate that the very success in attaining and restoring ‘that’ independent measure owes a great deal to the media coverage of the undaunted struggle and sacrifice of the lawyers and the unflinching perseverance displayed by your highness — a history-making episode endorsed by your advocates! In the main, whether it is the geo-political or the socio-economical sectors the ones who are in a relatively better control of media exercise an impetuous sway in the affairs of the state.

As the world powers happen to play proxy war in Pakistan and somehow maneuver to connive with local saboteur minded elements to perpetrate bloody acts of terrorism in multiple cities of Pakistan, it is obligatory for the mass media to condemn such acts and keep the public aware of their heinous designs and mould the popular opinion in the best interest of the state. The best defensive policy in such a situation, wherein own people are involved in subversive activities, is to do away with the ongoing frustrations of the downtrodden community, the most likely smoldering members of discontent, such as controlling escalating prices and substituting the power sector with alternative sources of energy and all these steps of the popular government ought to be given every possible transparent coverage by the media.

Chilling effects of sensationalizing electronic media on gullible mass mind:

Since the outbreak of recent acts of violence and terrorist attacks in Pakistan, the media has held it customary to give on-the-spot live coverage of the horrible scenes. One of the glaring examples that your goodself must have witnessed is the recent Sialkot lynching of two brothers by the provoked mob. Nearly all the TV news channels have been repeat-telecasting those brutal pieces of footage intermittently for many days to the extreme shock of the young and the old sensibility.

Sir! This account is by no means a reflection on the characteristic responsibility of media to keep the public well informed on national and international developments; yet pursuing a third-screen bottom-line strategy for extended hours is not understandable.

Anti-State Propaganda:

Some media persons seem to have garnered internal sympathies with the local terrorists and they try to give essential media coverage to their acts. This results in glorifying terrorism, their deadly acts and anti-state agenda. It has been speculated by some media anchor that about 50% acts of terrorism are going to curtail down provided the media doesn’t ensure coverage to their so-called heroic perpetration. It seems that the local media is being hijacked by foreign influence, most probably, through lucrative, behind-the-curtain financial and political patronage, and consequently jeopardizing the State’s healthy stance on democratic institutions because extended media coverage to the instances of atrocity at tactic level would certainly cause fear and harassment among the public in general and may eventually lead the state machinery to the inexorable clutches of our enemies who are backing a comprehensive media campaign to propagate an unstable image of Pakistan, the apple of the eye of the 3^rd world and the sole Muslim nuclear power and in a larger perspective they are tarnishing the true image of Islam in the face of the world; this notion entails serious repercussions when it comes to the very Islamic ideology from where the emergence of this country takes its roots. So, as a sane human being, as a sane Muslim and particularly as a sane Pakistani I am pretty concerned!

Attempt To Project A War-Stricken Image Of Pakistan:

Besides it also gives the impression that Pakistan has been got into a warlike situation and causes panic in the public. This has resulted in discouraging both the foreign investors in Pakistan and the national and domestic economy is persistently being shoved into recession.

Fear mongering is being promoted in Pakistani electronic media on purpose to manipulate the adherence and alignment of the public to achieve a desired end. The scared subject is at times made larger than it really is, and the tactics of scare-mongering are repeated over media round the clock to continuously reiterate the attention of the ‘plain folks’ to fear and propagate the designs of the agency backing a particular medium at a particular time.

In view of the above submission I would like to earnestly appeal your goodself and through your kind patronage the exponents of a responsible, mature media to legally take up the matter with all the media outlets to desist from sensationalizing the events of panic in the country. Otherwise, the possible unhealthy public reaction may find its way in some reactionary legislation against the media as part of its side effect.

Finally, I find no hesitation in mentioning here my pleasure that in writing the above account I have not been inspired by any political agenda — the matter is being reported to your highness exclusively in an individual capacity. It has been actually the over-whelming realization I conjectured from the day-to-day gloomy faces of the people around whose wholesome suffering image at length triggered me to convey this feeling just as an expression of concern for it’s my staunch belief that now people look up to you for vindication of their frustration! Your heroic struggle to safeguard the independent image of judiciary has appeared on the scene at a very precarious moment in the history of Pakistan — when the democratic institutional and the constitutional norms had been pushed to the verge of annihilation in this country. This has raised your figure among the public, as any sensible person can surmise, as the last ray of hope in the wake of on-going political scenario prevailing in the country. Consequently I should hope that the concerned judicial functionaries under your conscientious authority must rule out some legal framework to be strictly adhered to by the underperforming media personals.

Nokia Hires Microsoft’s Elop as CEO

HELSINKI – Nokia Corp. is replacing CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo with Microsoft executive Stephen Elop as the world’s top maker of mobile phones aims to regain lost ground in the fiercely competitive smart phone market.

The choice of a North American executive to lead a Finnish company reflects the increasing dominance of U.S. and Canadian companies in the evolution of the phone business.

Apple Inc.’s iPhone has set the standard for today’s smart phones, while Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerrys are the favorite of the corporate set. More recently, Google Inc.’s Android software has emerged as the choice for phone makers that want to challenge the iPhone.

Analysts welcomed the choice of the 46-year-old Canadian, who has worked closely with Nokia at Microsoft and at Macromedia Inc. developing software for Nokia phones. He has also held top posts at Juniper Networks Inc. and Adobe Systems Inc. At Microsoft, he headed the Business division, which makes Office software.

He takes over Sept. 21, Nokia said Friday.

The company’s share price jumped more than 6 percent on the news, but closed up only about 1 percent at euro7.79 ($9.91) on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

It was the first time that Nokia, considered by many as part of the Finnish national identity, chose a non-Finn to lead the company that grew from producing rubber boots to leading the world in making handsets.

Elop, observing that Canadians and Finns both hail from northern climes, was quick to allay fears he might move company headquarters abroad. Nokia is an outsized part of the small Nordic country’s economy — and self-image.

“This is the home of Nokia, it will continue to be the home of Nokia, and I just love being in these facilities,” Elop said. “At the same time recognizing that while it is a Finnish company it is also a global company and there are employees and partners and customers of Nokia all over the world.”

Finnish Prime Minister Mari Kiviniemi and Finance Minister Jyrki Katainen expressed satisfaction that Nokia was not planning to move.

“We have know-how, research and product development here. We also have an integrated and stable society to offer,” Kiviniemi said.

Nokia accounts for 1.5 percent of the small country’s gross domestic product and provides employment, including through subsidiaries, for some 60,000 workers in the country of 5.3 million.

Katainen said it was up to the company to decide on executive matters, including location of headquarters, adding that “what’s good for Finland is that Nokia is successful.”

With Nokia stock down more than 20 percent this year after two profit warnings, Nokia veteran Kallasvuo had come under increasing pressure.

Jorma Ollila, chairman of the board and former CEO credited with developing the Finnish company to an international leader in mobile phones, said Elop has “a strong software background and proven record in change management” to help Nokia meet new challenges.

In high-end phones, the hardware is becoming uniform, so the software is increasingly the ingredient that makes a difference.

Here, Nokia is trailing badly. It uses the Symbian operating system for its smart phones, which is older than Apple’s software and wasn’t designed from the ground up for touch screen phones. Other manufacturers that used Symbian have mainly jumped ship to Android.

“The Android camp is in the process of flooding the market with relatively cheap smart phones (that) knock the socks off Nokia’s current user experience,” Nomura analyst Richard Windsor wrote recently.

Symbian phones had 41 percent of the worldwide smart phone market in the second quarter, according to research firm Gartner, compared with 51 percent a year ago. Android phones, meanwhile grew to 17.2 percent from 1.8 percent. In the trendsetting U.S. market, Android was already the dominant software, according to NPD, another research firm.

Elop’s appearance at a news conference announcing the appointment was in striking contrast to Kallasvuo’s stiff press meetings made in halting English. Elop discussed ice hockey — close to both Canadian and Finnish hearts — and even jested about Finnish licorice candy he didn’t like.

“My job is to take this organization though a period of disruption,” Elop told reporters. “Nokia has many great assets in smart phone arena. It’s about the entire experience, it’s about the platform, it’s about the applications, it’s about the services.”

Elop, 46, joined Microsoft in January 2008. Microsoft hired him away from the network equipment maker Juniper, where he served for a year as chief operating officer.

“It seems that Nokia is now ready for an international charismatic leader,” said Microsoft Finland CEO Ari Rahkonen. “He is an international leader with broad international networks, a very charismatic performer and very keen on technology.”

In 2005, Elop became CEO of Macromedia, maker of Flash software, just months before Adobe bought the company. Flash allows people to use their Web browsers to watch Internet video and animation, and the software is now increasingly used on mobile phones

He is a computer engineering and management graduate from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and also served as a systems executive at Boston Chicken, Inc.

Elop has played a role in the growing cooperation between Nokia and Microsoft in recent years. In 2009, Nokia launched its first laptop, a netbook with a 10-inch screen that runs on Microsoft’s Windows 7 software. Previously, access to some of Microsoft’s most popular Web services, such as Hotmail and instant messaging, have been built into Nokia phone models.

The 57-year-old Kallasvuo, who joined the company in 1982, will leave as president and CEO on Sept. 20. Elop will replace Kallasvuo on Nokia’s board, though Kallasvuo will continue to chair the board of the Nokia Siemens Networks unit in a non-executive capacity. Nokia Siemens Networks, Nokia’s joint venture with Siemens AG of Germany, makes networking equipment.

Investors have long been expecting something fresh and new from the company that once had the innovative edge in the industry. That has not happened since Kallasvuo took over in 2006. He has also been unable to tackle problems in the North American market, the company’s worst performer, despite a pledge to make it a top priority.

Nokia also has predicted that while global mobile market will grow 10 percent this year, its own growth will remain flat, and its ailing Nokia Siemens unit continues to see revenue fall.

Nokia, based in Espoo near Helsinki, employs 130,000 people worldwide.

Pakistan 64th Birthday – Happy Independence Day!

Today is the 64th Birthday of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.The nation celebrates the 64th Independence Day with simplicity to express solidarity with the victims of floods. President Asif Ali Zardari has directed that in view of the floods no celebrations marking the Independence Day will be held at the Presidency this year.

Around 13.8 million people have been affected by the floods in Pakistan, making the scale of the disaster worse than the 2004 tsunami, 2005 earthquake in Kashmir and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, killing an estimated 1,600 people in two weeks, according to the United Nations.

The chief of staff of the army, General Ashfaq Kayani, also announced that the military had scrapped celebrations on Saturday and on September 6 and said that the money saved would be spent instead on relief efforts.

Yousaf al-Barmawy (65) found a new homeland when he moved from Syria to Pakistan in the 1970s. And so has his son, Maath (44). Together they have been recruiting Pakistani human recourses and placing construction, oil exploitation, manufacturing and agriculture specialists with industry leading firms across the globe.

Leaving four sons and three daughters behind in Daraa, a small conservative town in Syrian which borders Jordan to the south, Yousaf al-Barmawy, a PhD in Business Administration, started recruiting manpower for Saudi construction and oil exploration companies.

Back in 1970s and 1980s manpower export business was at its peak. Dr Yousaf sought help from Maath, his son, then a newly graduate with business management degree from Jordan University. Maath landed at the Karachi International Airport with his young Syrian wife, Misoun, then only 18, to start his career as well as a family life.

Today, after 23 years, Maath is a happy family man and a successful business owner with enough work to keep him busy even on Sundays.

His human resources recruitment company, MYB International (Pvt) Limited, specializes in placing professionals mainly outside Pakistan. Maath has placed over 10,000 Pakistanis with construction and manufacturing companies in countries anywhere from positions in South Korea, Malaysia and Sudan to mention a few.

Placement of Pakistani specialists overseas contributes some 7 billion in USD every year to the country’s economy. With improved tied with the United States and EU, the Pakistani government projects increased numbers of Pakistanis leaving for work abroad to bring an estimated 18billion USD in years to come.

With the raging war against terrorism in Pakistan’s tribal areas and along Afghanistan’s border as well as frequent bomb blasts across the country the official estimates for an increase in manpower exports may sound too ambitious for many but not for Maath.

“One Pakistani works and accomplishes as much as three workers of other nationalities do. This is why Pakistani manpower is welcomed in emerging and growing economies,” says Maath as he lights his next cigarette with the tip of the other still burning.

Maath is about to sign an agreement with several European countries to place Pakistani agriculture laborers abroad. Most of 170 million Pakistanis live in rural areas and know how to turn otherwise unusable land into grazing and fruitful. Agriculture has been their way of life for centuries.

“We are working hard to bring a new boost to Pakistan and its human resource. At the same time we help improve the nation’s image and position Pakistanis as hard working and skillful people,” he explains his optimism in fluent Urdu, national language of the country.

The most rewarding for Maath is a visit from a candidate his firm placed to labor to. Occasionally Maath receives small gifts of gratitude.

Anwar Yuosafzai, originally from northwestern Peshawarity of Pakistan, brought Maath dates, sweets and a cellular phone from South Korea where he was placed for labor.

“I got employed six years ago and my standard of life has changes so much fr the better that I have got married my two sisters,” says Anwar. He was also able to help his brother open a grocery store. Anwar says he got to know South Koreans very well during these last 6 years and says he respects Korean people as much as he loves his own.

Maath work is appreciated overseas as well. Letters of appreciation and gratitude from all over the world cover the walls of Maath’s office. Pashtun Pakistani labor force is in the highest demand and the best paid too, according to him. They are known for their hard work and honesty. And yet their Taliban-like attire causes suspicion.

“Anyone who has interacted with a pashtun knows how committed they are to their jobs and how self-respecting they are. Suspecting every one with a beard as a Taliban affiliate is a sheer lack of exposure,” says a serving diplomat for an EU member state who requested anonymity.

Political situation in Pakistan is rather volatile. Since January 2010, a chronology of events shows that terrorists have struck Karachi over half a dozen times. Many died in gang wars and political violence. Paramilitary troops were summoned to some parts of this metropolis, which according to official estimates houses 16 million people.

Despite of that, Karachi remains a safe city for Maath and Misoun, his wife.

Although the family has adjusted perfectly well in Pakistan- generally perceived in the west as a volatile country – Misoun’s family in Daraa remains concerned for their safety.

Misoun tries to comfort these concerns and change often inaccurate impressions during her annual trips to ancestral home.

“I tell them that it is a big and beautiful country . . . You should come and see it for yourself . . . I like everything of Karachi . . . I like shopping here . . . I like seeing the ocean,” says Misoun.

While Maath serves as a bridge between the Pakistani middle and a wide-range of nations where they go to serve, his ailing mother Mariam al-Barmawy (65) longs for meet her “sweet, quite and ambitious child”.

Perception of Misoun herself in Darra is different as well. “Misoun now looks like Pakistani. Her dress, make up, behavior and way of talking . . .She cooks both Pakistani and Syrian dishes equally well,” says Omima al Barmawy (47), Maath’s sister who lives in Daraa.

Apparently Maath has gone through a considerable transformation too.

“I don’t remember if any one came to ask about Maath . . . he didn’t have friends. He was a calm but ambitious person who liked cars and wanted to have his own business,” recalls Maath’s brother, Asem al Barmawy (39) who lives in Darra.

Maath has proven his mettle not only in reaching out to the construction and industry giants in Middle East, East Asia and Africa but also has won the exemplary trust of the Pakistani people. Asem thinks that Maath’s new home has brought out the best of him.

It seems there are no boundaries to Maath’s multicultural life. In addition to his international recruiting firm, a new newly adopted home, Maath has married a British-Pakistani, Aisha Khan (44), as his second wife.

While his in first home Misoun lives in a predominantly Syrian way, Maath’s second wife, Aisha, brings a European touch to his life in her separate home. The bouquet of languages spoken in this household speaks for itself.

“Maath, my son and I speak different languages such as German, Arabic, Flemish, Dutch, English and Urdu,” she says while lighting her cigarette over a breakfast table which has the traditional labneh and western donuts placed next to each other.

Middle East is one of the most multicultural regions in the world. It is home for Judaism, Christianity and Islam. And yet the society remains family centered and tribalistic with little celebration of other cultures.

“A nation such as Pakistan, that is multicultural by nature tends to be anti-multiculturalists and curtails multicultural activities instead of promoting them,” explains Professor Khalil Marrar Assistant Professor of Political Science at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at DePaul University.

However, the example of Maath portrays a slightly different perspective of cross-cultural communication and its dynamics.

Being a smart businessman, Maath also sends non-Muslim Pakistani manpower such as Christians and Hindus to keep his clients intact besides serving as an all-weather connection between cultures across the globe.

Terrorism is one catastrophe that destroys our country really badly. After a long time we will be able to watch a Drama that will be based on reality of terrorism and its devastations, Khuda Zameen se Gaya Nahin Hai, a TV2 Production. This new Drama serial is about the War on Terror. It’s a Story of spectacular courage in the face of terror. The story revolves around the Pak Army’s daring hawks that fight to clean their country from terrorism and during the course they lost their lives. It’s a story of Hopes, Courage and Sacrifice. The story highlights different aspects like killing of foreigners, rapes and abuses of women including the main issue of terrorism. The skillful pen of Asghar Nadeem Syed wrote the whole story of this mega drama serial. The Director Kashif Nisar puts his best in exploring this sensitive issue.

Most recently the Title song and video is being launched. After listening to the melodious song and striking lyrics I must say that it surely will revive the Spirit of Islam. A very well written song by Imran Raza and skillfully sung by Rahat Fatah Ali Khan it will surely leave its mark on the mind of listeners. The song starts with a very catchy stanza,

Hey Surkh Mausam, Ghata Nahin hai

Ghuttan Bohat hai, Hawa Nahin hai

The melody, the lyrics, and the voice everything is just perfect to me. The video of the song itself tells you the whole story.

Talking about the cast of the drama, it a combination of some old and new faces. It includes Nouman Ejaz, Aisha Khan, Ayub Khosa, Syed Jibran, Sara Chaudhry, Rashid Naz, Tipu, Khurram, Azim Sajjad. The new faces that are introduced are Zaman Armaghan Hazir, Captain Zishan Ali Malik, and Faizan Khawaja.
