Wateen Ranked No. 1 Wireless Broadband Company

Pakistan’s leading converged communications service provider, Wateen Telecom, has been ranked the number one wireless broadband service provider in the country by PTA. In a survey for quality of service for all broadband service providers, Wateen was ranked first in the overall standings for all wireless broadband operators in the country.
In pursuance of PTA’s role to safeguard of consumer interests and growth of quality broadband services, PTA carried out the second nationwide Broadband Quality of Service (QoS) Survey of all wireless and wireline service providers throughout the country. The survey was conducted during third and fourth quarter of 2011. It is worthwhile to note that QoS generally determines the standing and status of country’s telecom services; therefore, special emphasis is exerted to keep the QoS of broadband companies at a satisfactory level. PTA has devised QoS standards/Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in line with best international practices and in consultation with service providers. The post survey analysis is carried out on the basis of scores against each KPI.

Mobilink International Roaming (IR) Excels in PTA Ranking

Mobilink has once again proven to be the best service provider for International Roaming (IR) services, as per a recent survey conducted by the Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA). The survey is a part of an effort by the regulatory authority to ensure provision of quality services to cellular service subscribers who travel beyond Pakistan’s borders for work or leisure.

The operators were judged on the quality of their International Roaming services and billing parameters. This is the second time Mobilink has emerged as the nation’s top preference for mobile communication and services in 2011.

The company was previously ranked as “excellent” among all cellular service providers in the country, according to the results of the “customer’s perception survey” held in Q3 2011. Jahanzeb Taj, VP Marketing, Mobilink highlighted, “Mobilink has always strived to bring forth unmatched quality of services for its subscribers. The ranking we have achieved is a reflection of Mobilink’s efforts and the trust it has earned amongst the masses.”

Auction of a Cellular Mobile Phone License

One cellular license (defunct) in 800MHz band will be auctioned by PTA tentatively in March 2012.
The information memorandum containing interalia auction methodology and venue etc will be made available soon by PTA.

The new Mobile license is to replace “Instaphone” which are being inactive from past many years.

Auction Frequency Spectrum for Cellular Mobile Broadband Services

In pursuance of the policy directive issued by Ministry of Information Technology (MOIT), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is planning to Auction Frequency Spectrum for Cellular Mobile Broadband Services. The license for this service will be technology neutral and the licensees be able to deploy any technology including 3G / 4G / LTE / any other upcoming technologies.

The information Memorandum (IM) for auctioning process is being prepared by PTA. The auction will be held tentatively in March 2012 for which exact schedule will be issued later. The auction process will be overseen by a joint professional group (Auction Supervisory Committee) comprising of public sector stakeholders, including representatives of Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Information Technology, PTA and FAB etc. PTA has constituted a special committee for making preparations to conduct the auction in the most possible transparent manner.

For the awareness and information of potential investors, PTA is also planning to hold Investors Conferences in Karachi and Islamabad. International Road Shows will also be organized. The exact schedule for this auction would be made available soon. It is pertinent to mention that the introduction of Cellular Mobile Broadband services in the country will initiate a new economic cycle in the country and accrue great benefits for the national economy. It will also usher in new era for proliferation of a number of new applications for data intensive value added services. This will greatly fulfill the requirement and demands of Cellular Mobile Phone subscribers and professionals who are eagerly waiting for this service.

PTA Gets a Bad Name for Pakistan in International Media by Banning the word ‘Jesus’

If Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) were to act sane and stop degrading Pakistan’s already much distorted international image, it would not impose such regulations on words which are being put under criticism not just by the citizen groups in the country, but also in the international media. Those who are just on the look-out for any such bizarre act coming from Pakistan, they get to make the news big in a negative way and get a reason once more to say how uncivilized the whole nation still is.

If PTA is to ban words like Jesus, it should then ban words like Muhammad and Allah. PTA has not justified the reasons for banning the words that it did. One might assume that the word ‘Jesus’ was banned because some might use it in an abusive context, though Jesus (known as Isa in Islam) is considered to be an honourable prophet by all Muslims. If that could be the case, then equal measure of care should be given to other religious personalities, including that of Buddha and Guru Nanak Dev. If an abuse could be hurled toward religious figures, it could be thrown at any one.

It would really be a telecommunication mess to stop words like this. The decision is on a trial basis for now. Till the time that it would really be implemented, the mobile operating companies, who are also not pleased with such a ban, have a chance to upgrade their software for detecting any such questionable words and to choose which ones will finally make the list of banned words.

PTA has ordered to all telecom operators which are working in Pakistan to ban the abusive content which are being sent over SMS. According to the list there are almost 1500 abusive words in both urdu and English language.

PTA Customers Perception Survey Result: Mobilink Ranked First

Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) declare Mobilink as an excellent cellular mobile operator among its competitors.This was announced in its results after customers perception survey result which was held in September/October 2011. The Ufone stands on last position.

PTA launched a SMS-based Consumer perception survey system 8899 aiming to seek consumers perception about performance of their respective cellular mobile operators.For this survey, PTA made special arrangements to make it a free of cost service to encourage maximum participation from general public. The survey is first of its kind.

The survey was conducted by outreaching telecommunication consumers to maximize the geographical coverage. A transparent and fast ‘SMS-based’ mechanism was followed where users were asked to participate in the survey by sending response through SMS ranging from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) as per their perception. On the basis of the feedback received, PTA has compiled the final results.

Warid get second position in excellent category, Telenor on third, Zong on fourth and Ufone is on last position. As well as in poor category Zong get first position, Ufone on second, Telenor on third and Mobilink on fourth position and Warid on last.

Huawei Launches 2011 Broadband Forum & Road Show in Islamabad

ICT is Driving Force for Economic Growth, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen

Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that improved quality of telecom system and services has become a critical determinant of competitiveness in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), therefore, the policy makers are focusing on ICT not only as an element of support but also as a driving force of economic growth. This he said during his visit and address as Chief Guest to 11^th ITCN ASIA 2011 international exhibition and conference at Expo Center Karachi.

He said that revolution and convergence of technological platforms will continue to bring even more opportunities, development and growth aspects for market and subscribers. We at PTA believe to remain focused but also tailor a “Roadmap” for securing a win together with the market players and the relevant stakeholders in future as well.

Dr.Mohammed Yaseen said that we are going to deliberate on future of telecommunication, I certainly feel quite contended that this promising regime in Pakistan’s economy will continue bringing in substantial revenues and creating remarkable job opportunities. This may not only be limited to emerging technologies (3G, 4G) but rather the connected services (e-service, mobile banking) as well. We have been following a technology-neutral model which may prevail in coming era he added.

He said that PTA has envisioned that total telecom investments will reach US$ 2.4 billion by 2020, whereas the Telecom sector revenues would cross Rs. 620 billion by the same year. He mentioned that in the wake of growing trend of the mobile services, it can be predicted that the fixed line subscribers would more or less maintain the 5 million averages till 2020, while the broadband subscribers are expected to be 19.5 million. The mobile subscribers are likely expected to be around 161 million, approximately 89% of the total population.

He further said that with the advent of New Generation Networks, Internet Multimedia Service (IMS) platforms and Internet Protocol applications, the boundaries between transmission of Data, Voice and Video have vanished by virtue of IP Data, VoIP and IPTV. Telecoms in near future will be simpler while multimedia services are going to be delivered across all-IP broadband. At the end of conference Chairman PTA distributed shields among the participants.

Daydreaming of 3G Technology in Pakistan

The much awaited 3G technology was to be introduced in 2008 in Pakistan, but took a long time due to the government’s lack of decision in this matter. Even though the government will collect at least $30 billion in revenue sales from it and will also ease on the problem of unemployment in the country by creating millions of jobs. The government now wants to launch the 3G technology in the current fiscal year so as to give boost to the IT sector in Pakistan but unfortunately we are waiting for 3G from past three years and may be this year will also passes away without any final decision.

Now the ministerial committee has been formed by President Asif Ali Zardari to help decide the launch of third generation technology and whether the government should allow new international IT companies to enter the bidding for 3G licenses auction or not. The committee, which is based on Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Water and Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar, and also on representatives of private sector companies, had also been forwarded three different prospects.

The debate has been revolving on whether the government should agree to the demand of the telecom sector about not giving any new investor or company LDI (Long Distance and International) license till year 2013. But there is no doubt that there the arrival of 3G technology is long overdue. The committee will also consider the matter of complaints against service quality and hidden charges of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, but the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication can only give policy guidelines.

Total Investments will be $2.4 Billion by 2020 in Telecom Sector

A Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said in its study report that total investments in the country’s telecom sector will be $2.4 billion by 2020.

The study, titled Vision 2020, forecasts that revenues in the telecom sector will be over Rs620 billion in 2010. It says that the number of mobile subscribers is expected to be around 161 million, approximately 89 per cent of the total population, by 2020. The study says that the number of fixed-line subscribers will be five million in 2020 while the number of broadband subscribers is expected to be around 19.5 million.

The study says that mobile cellular technology has been primarily focused on the consumer market, acting as a substitute for often unavailable wired telephony. “Now visions of 4G and beyond, including established technologies such as WiMAX, are heralding the age of convergence.”

Illegal Gateway Exchange Unearthed in Multan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) alongwith Federal Investigation agency (FIA) has conducted a successful raid in Multan and seized three operational VoIP Gateways. According to details PTA and FIA teams through combined efforts not only traced the exact location but also carried out raid in areas of Altaf Town, Tariq Road, Multan. One person running the setup was also apprehended during the raid.

This success full raid, which was made possible because of continuous monitoring, shows the commitment and persistent efforts; PTA is putting in curbing the menace of grey traffic. The confiscated illegal setup consists of gateways, Tellulars, Switches, Routers and number of SIMs of different operators. Moreover, the campaign against illegal telephony resulted in blocking of more than 60,000 mobile SIMs alongiwth IMEIs.

It may be added that PTA with the state of the art monitoring facility is observing the international traffic coming in to the country, round the clock. The aim of monitoring is to identify the illegal gateway exchanges and track the elements operating them. Such exchanges bring huge loss to the national exchequer as well as to the telecom sector.

Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen appreciated the joint efforts of PTA and FIA teams and also warned all those involved in the illegal telecom business to stop their activities, otherwise PTA shall take strict action against them as per the law.

PTA Signs MOUs with CASE and IST for Mutual Cooperation

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Center for Advance Studies and Engineering (CASE) and Institute of Space Technology (IST) to promote telecom related research that would be beneficial for the institutions, the telecom industry as well as for the country. These MoUs would also boost mutual cooperation in the relevant fields and would enhance the industry academia linkages. Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen, Member Technical PTA, Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, President CASE Dr. Abdul Khaliq and Vice Chancellor IST, Brig Imran Rehman attended the ceremony held at PTA Headquarters today.

On this occasion, Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that currently Pakistan has state of the art telecom networks while we are working on enhanced international communication links. We are planning to improve terrestrial links with Afghanistan, Central Asia and China which would help economy and flow of information in the country. PTA would provide data on telecom sector and expertise to CASE and IST, reciprocally the Universities would encourage their students to undertake research in different areas of telecom sector.

He said that under the MoUs, PTA would help CASE and IST in identification of research areas. Similarly, CASE and IST would cooperate with PTA on different issues of trade, business and economy related to telecom sector. President CASE Dr. Abdul Khaliq and Vice Chancellor IST, Brig Imran Rehman, also spoke on the occasion and emphasized on the need of telecom research in the universities. They appreciated the fast growth in telecom sector and steps taken by PTA in this regard.

Main objectives of these collaborations are to support research integrated activities and to equip future leadership with theoretical and practical training in policy and regulatory issues of telecom sector. It is expected that the related organizations would benefit from this collaboration as young experts would be conducting research in the relevant fields of telecom with guidance of the faculty and PTA which could be converted into entrepreneurship. Industry is working on Venture Capital for entrepreneurship activities.

It may be mentioned that PTA being an academia friendly organization has already signed MoUs with COMSATS, NUST and UET Texila. PTA has been working continuously towards encouragement of research activities in telecom sector and taken number of initiatives to establish strong linkages with educational institutions for the promotion of telecom research. PTA has taken significant steps that have received positive response from the all stakeholders. These initiatives include PTA Gold Medal Scheme, Essay Competition on World Telecom Day and cash prizes for best research project competition and SMS-based Information System for educational institutions.

Mobile Users to visit Customer Centers for SIM Data Correction

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised the mobile phone subscribers to visit Customer Service Centers (CSC) of concerned mobile operator to get their SIM data corrected if there is any discrepancy in their antecedents. PTA has requested subscribers’ cooperation in streamlining of SIMs data to achieve target of 100% corrected data. In this regard, PTA has also directed cellular mobile operators to take all possible measures for the verifications of post and prepaid mobile connections of their subscribers within specified time period through “SIM information System 668”.

PTA introduced “SIM Information System 668” for the verification and correction of mobile SIMs data. Through this service subscriber can send his CNIC to 668 through SMS and in return he would receive detail of total SIMs against his CNIC alongwith name of the mobile company. In case there is any discrepancy, the user would visit CSC alongwith original CNIC to get the data corrected. The SIMs not corrected would be blocked after May 17, 2011. This is part of PTA efforts to block all illegal SIMs and clean the data of mobile users.

PTA has launched this service to facilitate mobile users and to get their data corrected. Without the cooperation of mobile subscribers the benefits of this service can not be achieved at desired level. PTA during last three years has launched number of campaigns through print and electronic media for the awareness of mobile users on this issue and it is still engaged in such activities. During the 3^rd phase of this campaign, mobile subscribers have shown great interest in having their SIM data corrected through 668 and operators are getting encouraging response.
