Telenor Pakistan continues to perform well in Q2 2011

TelenorPakistan, the country’s second largest cellular company, continued to perform well in the second quarter of 2011 according to the latest figures released by the Telenor Group. It added 914,000 subscriptions during the three-month period ending with a total of 26.7 million subscribers, a growth of 12% over the same period last year.

The company’s EBITDA margin has been impressive, growing over three percentage points over the previous quarter, while market share has remained stable at 24%.

Chief Marketing Officer, Telenor Pakistan Aamir Ibrahim, speaking about the solid second quarter figures, said: “I am happy with TelenorPakistan’s performance in the second quarter of 2011. We have been able to sustain growth and keep our EBITDA margin strong despite operating in a challenging business environment. As with previous quarters, we continue to receive recognition; TelenorPakistanand Tameer Bank’s easypaisa won the Shaukat Khanum Social Responsibility Award in recognition of the service’s impact on society of organized philanthropy, an achievement we are proud of.”

Also in the reporting period, TelenorPakistanlaunched Djuice’s ‘Apportunity’, a service that allows mobile application developers fromPakistanto create mobile apps and get them published. Apps are published by TelenorPakistanon the Nokia Ovi Store, Apple AppStore, and Android Marketplace for people around the world to download and enjoy.

Telenor responds to Propakistani’s allegations against easypaisa

Telenor Pakistan has always supported bloggers and considers them to be online journalists. We believe they have a very important role to play in the evolution of media in Pakistan.

Having an opinion and expressing it is the right of every citizen however, a line must be drawn when that opinion distorts and misrepresents facts and damages reputation.

Telenor Pakistan is dismayed by the sensationalistic reporting of a blogger on one of the leading telecom blogs, Propakistani.

In a recent story on Propakistani, http://propakistani.pk/2011/06/07/secret-british-aid-used-to-setup-easypaisa-gets-unveiled/ , the blogger alleges:

“It was recently unveiled that Telenor has secretly used British funds to establish its financial services solution called easypaisa

However, none of the involving parties, including Telenor, Tameer Bank or the British government ever announced the existence or the utilization of this fund.”

The fund is NOT a secret:

- The funding was received by Tameer Microfinance Bank NOT Telenor Pakistan through the State Bank of Pakistan and not directly from UKAid (DFID) or the British government.

- Tameer Microfinance Bank received it from the State Bank of Pakistan’s financial inclusion program under its technology related technical assistance grant for capacity building

- Further details of the grant and its disbursal process are (and have been) on the State Bank’s website so were never a secret

“It merits mentioning here that Telenor is making significant amount of revenues from it’s easypaisa services, while on other hands, despite of foreign aid, Easypaisa’s transactional charges are amongst the highest in all kind of money processing charges, locally and globally”

- Under its mandate, the grant cannot not be used to “subsidize” the cost of services offered. Since it was meant for “technology related technical assistance” it was used by Tameer Microfinance Bank to strengthen agent review and risk management systems and to enhance treasury and payment gateways for home remittances.

Mobile Financial Services Can Help Create New Jobs, Raise Pakistan’s GDP

According to a recent study conducted by Telenor Group and Boston Consulting Group, wider access to mobile financial services in Pakistan could lead to the creation of 1 million new jobs by 2020. An estimated US$2 billion could be added annually to government revenues, helping raise Pakistan’s GDP growth by 3%.

To discuss these prospects, a seminar titled ‘Shaping our financial future – Socio-Economic Impact of Mobile Financial Services’ was arranged under the aegis of easypaisa. Participants included representatives from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, State Bank of Pakistan, Telenor Pakistan, Tameer Microfinance Bank, senior government officials, development specialists and the media.

Christian Albech, CEO, Telenor Pakistan, spoke about the benefits of mobile financial services on individuals and society in Pakistan. “The study shows that mobile financial services can help families and businesses to respond in a better way to expense shocks, and can have positive effects on entrepreneurship. They can help improve children’s chances of completing primary school. Women’s access to funds can be bettered, with positive effects on child education and health. Mobile financial services can prove invaluable in supporting Pakistan’s social development goals.”

Nadeem Hussain, President & CEO Tameer Microfinance Bank, in his comments spoke about the positive impact of mobile financial services on the economy. He said: “The study shows that mobile financial services can help create new jobs and boost government revenues. GDP growth can be stimulated by increased access to credit, which prompts new business creation, and by formal remittances and increased savings. Mobile financial services can facilitate public services by providing e-government options and help reduce costs of financial transactions such as the disbursement of aid.”

According to the study, given a supportive environment, the percentage of Pakistan’s adult population using mobile financial services could go up from the current 2% to 35% by 2020 resulting in higher savings, creation of formal credit channels, and improved insurance usage.

The Telenor Group, in a bid to explore the impact of mobile-based financial services in emerging economies, looked at how having bank accounts and access to credit can change the way people live, work and develop over the next decade. Telenor Pakistan announced financial results for Q1 2011

Telenor Group has announced results for the first quarter of 2011. According to details, at the end of the first quarter of 2011 Telenor Pakistan subscribers reached 25.75 million which is nearly 5% higher than the previous quarter. EBIDTA margin remained firm with Telenor Pakistan’s market share at 24%.

Christian Albech, CEO Telenor Pakistan commenting on the results said: “I am pleased that we continue to perform well. Our performance is in line with our expectations and above par as compared with the industry average. In 2011 we hope to continue to consolidate our growth across all areas of the business.

”Also in the first quarter of this year Telenor Pakistan was presented with the High Tax Payer Award of Excellence 2010 from Pakistan Customs, Islamabad Collectorate.

Overall, Telenor Group reported revenues of NOK24.1 billion, representing an organic revenue growth of 7%. EBITDA before other items was NOK7.4 billion, EBITDA margin was 31 per cent, and operating cash flow was NOK5 billion.

“Our mobile operations are continuing the strong subscriber growth seen in the last part of 2010, adding 9 million subscribers during the first quarter this year,” said Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President and CEO of Telenor Group.

Telenor Pakistan celebrates its 6th anniversary yesterday by reiterating its commitment to bringing the benefits of telecommunications to people’s everyday lives.
Since its launch, the company has shown consistent high growth by performing above industry average every year. According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s latest annual report, Telenor Pakistan showed the highest growth rate of 14% in 2009-10.

Telenor Pakistan crosses 25 million subscriber mark

Telenor Pakistan announced today that the company’s customer base has crossed 25 million subscribers. The country’s second largest mobile operator grew in 2009-10 by adding subscribers at a rate of 14%, the highest in the telecom industry for the year.

Telenor Pakistan Announces Implementation Of Karo Mumkin Projects

Telenor Pakistan has announced the next phase of its ‘Karo Mumkin’ initiative. The two winning ideas that emerged from the recently concluded campaign will now be turned into projects and launched later this year. Telenor Pakistan’s Karo Mumkin initiative aims at helping people realize possibilities.

At a press conference held at Telenor Pakistan’s head office, the two winners shared details of their projects. Fariha Ambreen spoke about her project ‘Recycle Paper to Provide Notebooks to Schools for Under Privileged Children’ while Abdul Haq Mohiuddin gave details about his project ‘Donate Rs100 from your Monthly Salary to Make Education Possible for Street Children’. The two will work with project consultants and auditors Earnest & Young.

Talking about the Karo Mumkin projects, Usman Javaid, Director Marketing Telenor Pakistan said: “Telenor Pakistan is providing the funds, the means and the tools needed for the projects to reach completion with the confidence that they will benefit the people of Pakistan. It has been a fulfilling journey and I am sure the spirit will inspire others to launch similar initiatives.”

Fariha Ambreen, one of the project owners, said: “It has been a gratifying experience to work on the project with Telenor Pakistan. I am in talks with 50-plus organizations which will become collection points for waste paper; I have already spoken with a premium packaging company in Lahore to convert the waste paper into notebooks. I am now looking at schools where the notebooks will be provided. I am excited at being able to turn my idea in reality. Although we have not reached our destination yet but we are certainly on our way.”Abdul Haq Mohiuddin, the other project owner, said: “With Telenor Pakistan’s help and the project management consultants, I have been able to turn my idea into reality. I plan to launch a website to help people donate online and through easypaisa services. Considering that on an average 1800 students graduate from a university every year, imagine the possibilities if they would donate just Rs100 from their monthly salary for this cause.”

To implement their ideas, the two winners will establish NGO’s with the names ‘Sabz’ and ‘Edvolution’. The hope is that these eventually become self-sustaining. Telenor Pakistan representatives will act as advisory members on the Board of Trustees.

Telenor Pakistan’s Karo Mumkin show began airing in July 2010 and was designed to enable people to turn a patriotic idea into reality. The Karo Mumkin show asked audiences to send in their ideas by responding to the question ‘Where Do You See Pakistan in the Future?’ Over 24,000 ideas were received of which two were selected by a jury panel.

Telenor Pakistan financial results for Q4 2010

Telenor Pakistan has announced results for the fourth quarter of 2010. Pakistan’s second largest cellular company continued to out-perform the industry by registering above average growth. At the end of Q4 2010, the number of subscribers reached 24.7 million, showing a year-on-year growth of 10%. EBITDA margin has remained strong in the quarter, growing by 9% as compared to the same period last year. The year closed with Telenor Pakistan retaining its subscriber market share of 24.5%.

Jon Eddy Abdullah, CEO Telenor Pakistan while commenting on the results said:“I am pleased to share Telenor Pakistan’s latest financial results. These show sustained growth both in the last quarter of 2010 and throughout the year. Telenor Pakistan continues to show solid performance in the face of a number of challenges such as the widespread floods, power shortages and the security situation. For 2011, we look up to the government to rationalize the taxation structure for the telecom sector to ensure the industry continues to contribute long-term to the economy of Pakistan.”

In the previous quarter, Telenor Pakistan along with its partner Tameer Microfinance Bank received global recognition for easypaisa when they were presented the ‘Best Mobile Money Transfer Entrant of the Year Award’. Easypaisa was pitted against some of the leading mobile financial service providers in the world, such as Vodafone and Safaricom, and outshone mobile operators Grameenphone, Banglalink and Vodafone to become the winner.

Christian Albech appointed as CEO of Telenor Pakistan

Telenor Pakistan announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Mr. Christian Albech as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Christian will succeed Mr. Jon Eddy Abdullah from March 1^st 2011.

His extensive management experience and ability to drive innovation and deliver results will be a great benefit for the company. Christian Albech has substantial experience from executive positions in the communication and media industry. He comes from the position as CEO of Telenor Broadcast, where he has been responsible for Telenor Group’s portfolio of broadcast operations – Canal Digital, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting, Norkring and Conax. At the end of third quarter 2010, these operations represented 9 percent of Telenor Group’s total revenues.

In his career, Christian Albech has been central in establishing and developing the Nordic pay-TV market. As CEO of CTV he was responsible for rolling out some of Norway’s first cable TV networks. More recently he has been heading the leading Nordic TV distributor Canal Digital, driving the transition from analogue TV to digital TV, the introduction of HDTV, the introduction of mobile TV and several new innovative products and advanced TV services. Mr. Albech also has extensive experience from serving on the board of directors of numerous national and international companies.

One of the country’s largest, this satellite-based network will provide connectivity for GSM traffic in areas where microwave or optical fiber is unavailable.

It has been designed to remain least affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods, thus allowing for uninterrupted communication services to customers. Telenor Pakistan management volunteered flood relief activities

Telenor Pakistan Management volunteered recently to assist in the ongoing relief efforts in Charsadda, Khyber Pukhtunkhwa. They took active part in the registration of coupons, offloading relief goods from trucks and distributing them among the affected families. Relief items were distributed among 402 families during the day. Here they can be seen being briefed by a Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) team member before the distribution. Telenor Pakistan’s flood relief drive includes volunteer initiatives and provision of relief items to the affected families. It has pledged PKR100 million for the flood relief activities and has signed a MoU with PRCS for the relief and rehabilitation of those affected.

Telenor Pakistan pledges Rs100 Million for Flood Affectees

5^th August, 2010. Islamabad. Telenor Pakistan has pledged Rs. 100 Million in funding and telecommunication services, towards relief and rehabilitation of flood affectees. The amount will be used to facilitate immediate relief efforts and longer term rehabilitation initiatives by Pakistan Red Crescent Society.

Chief Strategy Officer and VP Corporate Affairs, Telenor Pakistan, Aamir Ibrahim said, “In this hour of need, where millions have been affected by devastating floods across the country, Telenor Pakistan stands by its brethren. We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the destruction caused by recent floods. We are sure that this humble effort will help those who need it most.”

Telenor Pakistan completes 50 solar-powered cell sites

Islamabad, July 5, 2010: Telenor Pakistan has become the country’s first mobile operator to complete the largest solar-powered telecommunication network to be established in Universal Service Fund-assisted areas.

Of the 50 solar-powered cell sites established, 47 are in the USF-assisted areas of Mirpur Khas and Bahawalpur. The sites are providing telecommunication services to nearly 1.63 million people who previously lacked any such access. The other three sites are in Islamabad and Khyber-Pukhtoonkhwa.

The solar-powered cell sites are an outcome of Telenor Pakistan’s Green Energy Project that aims to provide environment-friendly telecommunications solutions.

Khalid Shehzad, Chief Technology Officer, Telenor Pakistan commenting on the achievement said: “We are delighted to have created the largest solar-powered cell network in the USF-assisted areas of Mirpur Khas and Bahawalpur. With the deployment of solar-powered cell sites our aim is to provide environment-friendly telecommunication services even in the remotest areas of Pakistan. By doing so we are reducing power demands on the national grid and also helping to reduce carbon emissions. Alternative energy solutions are the way forward and we will continue to explore greener, more environment friendly solutions for our business.”

USF is a government fund set up with the aim to provide basic data and telephony services to the unserved and underserved areas of the country.

Solar energy is one of the salient features of Telenor Pakistan’s Green Energy Project that will help in preventing emission on average of 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide per site per year.
